Marsyas Trio

flute, cello, piano

Once upon a time,
at the very beginning of time,
there was a big BANG!

Then, there were stars.
Around the stars spun planets.
And one of the planets was called ‘Earth’.

Don’t believe me? You’re sitting on it right now.
And if you’re not sitting, then sit down immediately, because the story is about to begin…

This is the story of the Three Little Mammoths.

The Marsyas Trio is delighted to present their new performing and educational project with music is by BASCA award-winner Robin Haigh, using an original text by children’s author Eoin McLaughlin, best known for ‘The Hug’.

‘Three Little Mammoths’ is a 30-minute children’s radio play for narrator, flute/piccolo, cello and piano, which aims to provide an ecstatically memorable first experience of chamber music for children in Key Stages 1 & 2 (ages 5-11).

The play explores the themes of kindness, generosity, and tolerance as we follow the migration of the main characters to far-off lands, where everything is different from their home. Live performances are to be narrated by a comedian or actor, tapping into Robin’s “vibrant, witty” (Chicago Classical Review), “irreverent” (Chicago Theatre Review), and “completely refreshing” (British Composer Awards) compositional style.

The Marsyas Trio bring Three Little Mammoths live to concert halls and schools in an hour-long show. Performances include an educational element, with the Trio introducing instruments to the children and engaging them with a nursery rhymes sing-along.

The Marsyas Trio also recorded ‘Three Little Mammoths’ for radio broadcasts, featuring an award-winning Scottish comedian Janey Godley as narrator (‘One of Scotland’s finest onstage treasures…Compelling…ballsy…a breath of fresh air’ (Guardian).
